Budgeting for Home Renovations

We are looking at doing some renovations this year and for fun, I looked up “Home Renovations on a Budget”. Google responded with 27,000,000 potential answers.

So, like everybody today I’m wondering if renovating with cost limitations is even possible today.

Since every step taken to settle on a budget can be stressful- here a few things to consider:

Plan and prioritize:

Identify your needs and wants: Start by listing the renovations you need (e.g., fixing a leaky roof) and those you want (e.g., updating the kitchen countertops). Prioritize based on necessity and what you have available to spend.
Set a realistic budget: Factor in not just materials and labor, but also permits, unexpected costs, and a contingency fund (10-15% of your budget) for potential issues. Research average costs for your project and area using online resources or consulting professionals. I have found it to be very difficult to stay within budget. Things like electrical outlets, and wider archways….mystically appear while doing the project.

Save and finance responsibly:

Save up beforehand: Aim to save a significant portion of the cost upfront to avoid excessive borrowing.
Explore financing options: If borrowing is necessary, consider low-interest loans or lines of credit. Compare options and avoid high-interest debt. Do not borrow more than you can afford assuming to make up the difference when you sell.

Be cost-conscious during the project:

Get multiple estimates: Compare quotes from several contractors to ensure you’re getting fair pricing. Sign a contract with prices stated before you begin work. And check references!
Consider DIY options: For projects you’re comfortable with, tackle them yourself to save on labor costs. DIY is not for everyone- don’t lie to yourself and pay extra to have work redone.
Be flexible with materials: Choose high-quality but cost-effective alternatives, like using laminate countertops instead of granite. Consider using reclaimed or salvaged materials for a unique touch.
Shop around for materials: Compare prices at different stores and online retailers, and consider bulk discounts for larger projects.
