Our neighborhood is getting ready for the annual Garage Sale.

It’s well organized and anyone who wants to participate adds their name to the list.  Some of the super-organized neighbors post the sale in multiple locations and streams of people show up on the scheduled days. We get a head start when neighbors post on the community’s Facebook page items they are looking to buy- a sort of presale which is also very successful.

Some of us just donate to local charities and the garage sale timing is a good reminder to gather items to donate.

However, you accomplish getting “stuff and clutter” out of your house is a win-win.

Items to sell or donate:

  • Baby clothing and toys are great.  If you don’t have a family member that wants your gently used clothes and toys- garage sale buyers and charities are happy to have them.
  • Kid’s clothing and “stuff”.
  • Adult Clothing
  • The exercise equipment you no longer use
  • Unused golf clubs, tennis racquets, pickleball paddles, fishing poles, and camping gear
  • Bikes -all sizes.  Lots of adults are looking for deals on larger bikes
  • Video games, puzzles, board games
  • Furniture- larger pieces require large vehicles to move.  Either advertise ahead or keep your furniture down to sizes that fit in a car or van.

Other items you may looking to get rid of are books and musical instruments.  If you’re ok getting less cash from the sale, donate books to the local library and instruments to the schools.

Take time and be honest with yourself.

We all have smaller appliances, random artwork, tools, and stuff we haven’t used in years- maybe decades.  It’s time to part company.  Should you decide to go the garage sale route and not everything sells, bundle into heavy-duty bags and donate to your favorite charity the next week.  In short-don’t move back into your home.
