The recent power outage was an eye-opener for homeowners with electronic “keyless” access to their homes and garages.

If you were home when the power went out you were ok (maybe extremely hot)-but at least you had access to your home.  Lots of folks were out and when they returned home -garage door openers didn’t work.  Nor did a lot of the electronic keyless entry systems.  Most have battery back -up but many require wi-fi connections.  No power equals no internet!

If you’re like most of us you have a spare key to your home- somewhere.

It’s time to make sure your property has at least one door accessible by an old fashion key.  And then you need to make sure the key is available during an unplanned emergency.  Having gone through this dilemma in our previous home the answer was to give a key to multiple neighbors.  Hopefully, somebody would be home when the power went out so we could get a key.

Most of us carry keys with us- but there are times when we’re out without all our purses and bags- so plan for the worst-case basis.
