The National Association of Realtors released a detailed report on home improvement projects worth the money.

Homeowners are constantly remodeling, redesigning, and changing their home for a variety of reasons. This report ( long but worth the reading time) takes a deep dive into the reasons for remodeling and the potential cost recovery at the time of sale.

It also contains:

  • The typical cost of 20 remodeling and replacement projects, as estimated by members of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI)
  • How much appeal each project is likely to have for buyers, according to REALTORS®
  • How much Realtors® estimate that homeowners can recover on the cost of the projects if they sell the home.

It’s important to remember that no household project recoups the entire investment.  I’ve always told clients to do it for their own enjoyment and don’t expect the next person to appreciate the full value.

Also, the report is based only on  “estimates” from Realtors® and may be off by a few percentage points.

Bottom line fresh paint, clean carpets and decluttering still have the highest ROI (return on investment) so don’t think finishing your lower level for $45,000 adds $45,000 to your asking price.

If you have questions about the ROI on your home projects check with your Realtor®.
