Many people think of windmills, solar panel and rain water collection systems when they hear “green”.  But for many or today’s home buyers “green” comes down to the simple things like insulation, energy efficient and up-to-date.  According to data from the National Association of Realtors the infographic below was released by Keeping Current Matters

Some Highlights from NAR:

  • 11% of new homebuyers stated “energy efficient features” as the reason for their purchase- up from 9% just 2 years ago.
  • The most popular remodeling projects done for energy efficiency were insulation upgrades, HVAC replacements, and vinyl & wood window installations.
  • Research shows that word preference does make a difference when it comes to attracting “green buyers” which means that if you’re thinking about selling your “green” home -the real estate agent you select should know how to use the right key words when listing your property.

Green Remodeling Options to Consider:

  • Low-flow shower head and faucets
  • Low-flush or dual-flush toilets
  • Energy efficient lighting
  • Tankless or solar water heater
  • Energy-Star appliances
  • Low-VOC paints and wood finishes
  • Lighting controls
  • Reflective or light-colored roofing
  • Bio-based insulation
  • Double-paned or Low-E windows
  • Solar or Photovoltaic panels

Just make sure to check out the costs associated with making your home more energy efficient are cost effective. Upgrading windows, furnaces, caulking, beefing up insulation and energy efficient appliances are pretty much standard today.  In our area solar panels may not be the best investment.
