Will Damp Basements Dry Out in Greater Cincinnati?
May 5th, 2011 categories: Cincinnati Ohio
As we take advantage of a couple of days without rain (hopefully) in greater Cincinnati- there are lots of questions about what to do about damp and/0r wet basements.
Well I’m not an inspector or contractor but I’ll share tips professionals have given me over the years:
- If you have a sump pump- check it. A dead sump should be replaced quickly before the next storm.
- Clean clogged gutters/downspouts. Water runoff needs to flow directly from gutters to downspouts. Rain water that skips over messy gutters ends up pouring down around the base of the foundation…and into the basement.
- Loose gutters- pulled away from house- allows excess rain water to just run off roof straight down the surfaces into the foundation.
- Make sure window well covers are secured.
- Probably not enough time in the next few days to fix landscaping issues- but garden beds that have settled and now slope toward the foundation may need to be regraded.
Of course if you have major water issues- you need to seek help from professionals. If wet basements were a novelty in the greater Cincinnati area- they’re wouldn’t be lots of businesses here to handle the problems.
Finally, a personal note- we run a humidifier 12 months of the year. Luckily we have escaped the wet basement syndrome -but the humidifier helps with eliminating the “dampness”.
If you’re having “issues” with all the water and need the names of some professionals- call or email me for names.
