The survey says-
Nearly six-in-ten Americans (59%) say it is “unacceptable” for homeowners to stop making their mortgage payments, according to a Pew Research Center survey. But more than a third say the practice of “walking away” from a home mortgage is acceptable, at least under certain circumstances.
No surprise that homeowners whose home values declined during the recession are more likely to say that “walking away” from a mortgage is acceptable. So do those who were unemployed or experienced other types of financial problems during the recession. The survey points out as the housing markets continues to flounder in many parts of the country- more than 1 in 5 homeowners say they owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth. This is particularly evident in the West- (referred to as ground zero in the mortgage meltdown) where 25% of the people surveyed said it was ol to walk away versus just 19% of Midwesterners, 18% of the Southerners and 16% in the East.
The concept of walking away has some profound implications when it is estimated by Realty Trac Inc that lenders foreclosed on approximately 93,000 properties in July.
