Are You Prepared for a Green Fried Computer?

The deluge of rain, lightening, high winds and locusts swirling around the past few days has fried a few high end electronics and refrigerators around greater Cincinnati Ohio.
The current weather is a good reminder that disaster planning is not just for businesses!
As I “objectively” looked around the house, I decided that while my business has a disaster recovery plan, we definitely needed to implement the same level of attention to planning for the home front.
Yes, we have home owner’s insurance and that will (hopefully)cover replacing “stuff” that may be damaged. But what about all the other things that could be lost if our home sustained major damage.
To begin the task, taking new pictures of everything we currently own. Try remembering what you have in the kitchen cabinets…let alone what’s in the closets.
All important documents need to be copied and stored somewhere else for backup.
Credit card numbers- same as above.
And then there is the computer! Of course we back up the computer, however the back up drive is sitting 2 feet away from the computer. So now I am looking into a simple way to store pictures and important documents online. In fact, all the “paper” documentation could be stored online. This would give us easy access to important information from anywhere.
Planning for emergencies is always important- just make sure that once you (and your family) are out of harm’s way that you have a plan for getting your life (lives) back to order.

This is a great suggestion. If our condo were to, heaven forbid, burn down, the secure file cabinet wouldn’t stand up against the challenge.
My husband and I have been looking into scanning our “important files” - ie. credit card info, should they be stolen or lost, copies of passports, birth certificates, and wills, insurance policies. Once we have them all scanned, the plan is to save them on our own secure web server (offered by several companies), which can be accessed from any computer…perhaps with a backup sent to our parents in case of emergency.
It would be helpful if you identified some of the online services and estimated costs for on line document storage. My mother in law’s house burnt to the ground in the 90s and she lost every thing. A service that helped her sort and store her documents (including photos) would have been wonderful. Such a business would probably thrive in the expected onslaught of baby boomer relocations. I know realtors often give extra help to elderly clients (mine was actually helping an older lady pack). Tying this service in with a relocation/retirement move would be pretty smart.
